When should sedation be used during an MRI scan?

IV Sedation can be extremely useful, and sometimes necessary for scanning pediatric and adult patients who have issues lying still during a scan. When an MRI is necessary to diagnose a potentially serious condition, light sedation can ensure the fastest exam time and the highest quality images with the elimination of motion. For some patients, it can allow for a much more comfortable and tolerable experience. IV sedation is safe, controllable, and easy to perform.

Pediatrics

For some children, lying still for the required length of time for an exam can be extremely difficult. The last thing a nervous parent needs is delays in the procedure. The necessary tests can easily be performed with IV sedation, providing a pleasant experience for children and their parents.

Overly Anxious & Claustrophobic

The amount of anxiety associated with MRI can delay or prevent someone from going in for a needed procedure. Under sedation, these patients have quick and comfortable scans in a soothing environment. It is important to diagnose disease in its earliest stages.

Extreme Pain While Lying on Back

Patients who cannot lie still due to extreme pain can benefit significantly from sedation. Now these patients can receive their diagnosis comfortably without any pain.
