PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography)

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology is proud to provide Long Island with the advanced PET/CT scanner, the Siemens Biograph, in Massapequa and Smithtown. The Biograph combines the incredible metabolic detail of a PET scan with true volumetric images of a multislice CT scan. PET is a powerful imaging technique that focuses on the body’s metabolic process allowing for the detection of disease long before any damage occurs. CT provides detailed information about the body’s anatomy such as shape, location, and size through multiple cross-sectional images ("slices"). The merging of PET and CT offers the most precise anatomical road map available, producing unprecedented diagnostic confidence in areas such as oncology and neurology. Physicians get the best of both worlds and are now able to accurately diagnose and identify cancers and brain disorders through a single, noninvasive procedure.

Our PET/CT scanner is ideal for:

  • Early diagnosis of disease
  • Accurate staging and restaging of disease
  • Efficacy and monitoring of treatment
  • Differentiating between malignant and benign tumors
  • Determining if cancer has returned after treatment
  • Patients with neurological metabolic brain disorders
  • Following patients with early Alzheimer’s disease through mid and late stages

Our Biograph PET/CT Scanner provides physicians with:

Finer Detail

  • High resolution and volume sensitivity
  • Extremely precise registration and fusion
  • Detection of the tiniest lesions

Superior Image Quality

  • Advanced 3D imaging produces unprecedented image quality
  • Much greater flexibility across all applications and patient types

Increased Efficiency

  • Shortest PET•CT scan times available
  • Multiple medical testing procedures are replaced by a single exam

PET/CT for Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease destroys brain cells, causing a decline in mental functions. A PET•CT scan shows the brain’s biological changes attributed to Alzheimer’s disease before any other diagnostic test.

Early detection and confirmation of Alzheimer’s disease allows for:

  • Early drug therapy to slow the loss of mental ability
  • Extremely precise registration and fusion
  • Differentiating between Alzheimer’s and other dementing processes, chronic depression and normal aging
A PET•CT scan should be considered for patients with known or suspected:
  • Lung cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Melanoma
  • Lymphoma
  • Head and neck cancers
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Solitary pulmonary nodules
  • Uterine cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Gastric cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Primary bone malignancies
