SPECT Nuclear Medicine (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography)

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology utilizes five dual-detector state-of-the-art SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) Nuclear Medicine cameras in Massapequa, Plainview, Merrick, East Setauket, and Smithtown.

Nuclear Medicine involves the use of radiopharmaceuticals to diagnose and treat disease, uniquely providing information about both the structure and function of virtually every major organ within the body. We investigate biological processes that take place at the cellular and subcellular level. We are shown the physiological function being investigated with unprecedented precision.

Our state-of-the-art SPECT Nuclear Medicine cameras are ideal for:

  • Evaluation of bones for fracture, infection, arthritis and tumors
  • Determining the presence or spread of cancer
  • Analyzing kidney function
  • Measuring thyroid function to detect an overactive or underactive thyroid
  • Visualization of heart blood flow and function
  • Scanning lungs for blood flow problems
  • Identification of blockage in the gallbladder
  • Locating the presence of infection

Nuclear Cardiology

Our extensive Nuclear Medicine department performs Myocardial Perfusion Imaging Studies with exercise stress and pharmacological stress testing. This noninvasive diagnostic tool detects coronary artery disease with high sensitivity and specificity.

MUGA/Cardiac Blood Pool Studies are also performed. This test measures ejection fraction, the percentage of blood pumped out of a filled ventricle with each heart beat. This test is often requested prior to chemotherapy for monitoring heart function.

A cardiologist is present during every exam we perform for close monitoring and to provide an expert analysis.
