Digital Mammography

With Full Field Digital Computer Assisted Detection (CAD)

A mammogram is a very low dose x-ray of the breast using specialized equipment and technologists. This technique provides the sharpest images of the inner structures of the breast and has been developed to detect small cancers even before they can be felt on physical examination. We are proud to provide state-of-the-art digital mammography at all eight of our facilities.

Digital mammography has been proven to be superior to film/screen mammography for early detection of breast cancer in young patients, and in all patients with glandular, dense breast tissue. Instead of film, digital mammography uses solid-state detectors that convert x-rays into electrical signals. The electrical signals are used to produce images of the breast that can be seen on a computer screen or printed on film. The images and reports are available for our referring physicians instantly through secure access on our Web Portal.

Computer-aided detection (CAD) systems use a digitized mammographic image obtained from the digitally acquired mammogram. The computer software then searches for abnormal areas of density, mass or calcification that may indicate the presence of cancer. The CAD system highlights these areas, alerting the radiologists of areas that need a further analysis.

Screening Mammogram

Mammography is used as a screening tool to detect early breast cancer in women experiencing no symptoms. Early detection is the best tool for fighting breast cancer, which can show up on a mammogram up to two years before an abnormality can be felt on a physical examination. Doctors recommend monthly breast self-exams, and getting a mammogram screening once a year after age 40. Women who have had breast cancer and who are at increased risk due to a genetic history of breast cancer should seek expert medical advice about whether they should begin screening before age 40 and about the frequency of screening.

Diagnostic Mammogram

Mammography can be used to diagnose an abnormality felt on a physical examination, such as a lump. An ultrasound, breast MRI, or an interventional biopsy may be recommended for further analysis.
