DXA Bone Densitometry Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry

A DXA Bone Densitometry has become the standard for measuring the density of your bones. It is a very low dose x-ray that checks for signs of mineral loss and bone thinning. It is used to assist in diagnosing osteoporosis, a condition of low bone density that reduces bone strength and may result in fractures, physical deformity and pain. According to a 2002 study by the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 30 million American women and 14 million men are affected by osteoporosis or osteopenia. Osteoporosis screening has lead to the earlier diagnosis of this disease, in many cases even before symptoms occur. The study is quick, painless, noninvasive and extremely reliable.

About the Procedure

At the time of examination, you will be asked to lie down on the scan table in a relaxed position. We ask you to wear clothing that is comfortable, so that disrobing may not be needed. The exam is painless and takes about 15-20 minutes. The scanner passes over your lower spine, hip and wrist when indicated. Your results will be reviewed by one of our physicians and then forwarded to your doctor.
