Dental CT (Computed Tomography)

Previously, radiographic images that were used to place implants were two dimensional. These two dimensional images provided a reasonable estimate of bone height, but often bone width was not determined until the bone was exposed during surgery. This often led to surprises for the implant surgeon.

Two world renowned companies developed technologies that addressed the issue of inadequate or insufficient jaw bone structures. CT scans provided the objective data for determining which implant sites would offer the best potential for achieving the highest predictability for success.

Imaging in 3 Dimensions

Determination of inadequate bone structures must utilize cross sectional images. There are two ways to acquire these images. The first method uses tomography which is accurate approximately 60 percent of the time. The second method involves the use of Computed Tomography Studies (CT SCAN). This allows a very detailed assessment in 3 dimensions.

These 3D visualizations, coupled with the appropriate software, allow implants to be placed with a level of precision that was unattainable years ago. In addition, the surgical procedure can often be accomplished in a much more conservative procedure which involves greatly reduced discomfort, less treatment time and a more accurate final outcome.

Currently, there are two companies that have developed virtual modeling software. MATERIALISE developed SIMPLANT computer guided implantology software. NOBEL BIOCARE developed the NOBELGUIDE concept using Procera software.

Our newly installed systems utilize the latest version of SimPlant software and editing tools for predictable treatment planning of dental implants. This allows the implant surgeon to find the ideal position of the implant without artifact. Together with our 64 and 128 slice CT scanners, we are truly able to offer diagnostic confidence.
