Cardiac and Vascular CT Angiography

Zwanger-Pesiri has acquired the most extensive experience on Long Island with CT (Computed Tomography) Angiography, performing over 4,000 CTAs. With our 64 and 128 slice CT scanners, we are dedicated to identifying and diagnosing cardiac disease as early as possible, so that treatment can begin long before a heart attack or stroke occurs. This noninvasive procedure takes seconds and does not require beta blocker premedication to slow and control the heart rate.

Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease is the number one cause of death in this country. Every 60 seconds, someone in the US dies from a heart attack. In half of those cases, there was no warning signs or previous symptoms. When detected early, there are many preventative measures to greatly reduce the chances of heart attack or stroke. While the symptoms and signs of coronary artery disease are noted in the advanced state of disease, most individuals with coronary artery disease show no evidence of disease for decades. Stress tests do not show any abnormalities until an artery is at least 60% narrowed. Most heart attacks occur in arteries that are less than 50% narrowed and are therefore not detectable by any form of stress testing.

CTA for the Early Detection of Arterial Narrowing

A CTA can determine if you are at risk for a heart attack years before the first symptoms. By detecting calcium deposits in the artery walls, our state-of-the-art CT scanners can detect the presence of blockages in your coronary arteries that may not yet be severe enough to show up on other tests. A CTA is the most sensitive noninvasive method currently available to accurately identify the presence of early coronary artery disease.

A CTA should strongly be considered for any individual with a family history of atherosclerotic disease or a personal history of angina, heart attacks, bypass grafts or stents, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, or poor leg circulation.

Benefits of Cardiac and Vascular CTA

  • Pinpoints cardiovascular disease early and noninvasively
  • We are able to perform CTAs on patients with irregular heart rates or arrhythmias
  • No longer the need for beta blockers to slow and control heart rate
  • Detection of soft plaque before symptoms occur
  • Greater sensitivity than a myocardial perfusion stress study
  • Identifies disease, dissection, and aneurysms in the aorta and other major blood vessels
  • Identifies aneurysms or arteriovenous malformations inside the brain
  • Indicates disease in the renal artery, visualizing blood flow
  • Evaluates the details of arteries feeding a tumor
  • Examines pulmonary arteries in the lungs to rule out pulmonary embolism
